Cerro Gordo Mine Works

Silver Gelatin Print

Discovered by prospectors, 1865
A camp on the brow of the Inyos was laid.
Thousands rushed to the riches, and a few to deprive
Them of the bullion they hauled down the steep "Yellow Grade".
A century later a new rush upcast
Adrenaline, my mind extracting the past
Of bustling Fat Mountain. The ghosts in my head
Are smelting the silver. The clouds laden lead
Poison the air downwind of the furnace.

Miners roughly discarding glass, metal, debris
Between crude shacks, shingled with pure silver sycee.
A century later my camera's the witness
To report where the cast off, worn out shoe landed
That trod dance halls and adits and now lies here, stranded.

Mission San Antonio Chapel

Silver Gelatin Print

Mission San Antonio de Padua is one of my favorite of California's 17 missions, not only for it's beauty but also for it's isolation. The surrounding countryside is undeveloped and much as it was in 1771 when the mission was founded.
